What is National Sense of Smell Day?
National Sense of Smell Day is an annual, springtime program at children’s museums and science centers across the U.S. and is sponsored by the Sense of Smell Institute, The Fragrance Foundation’s Research & Education Division. This entertaining and educational one-day event focuses on the mysterious sense of smell; how it works and the important role it plays in many aspects of our daily life as well as how it interacts with our other senses (especially taste).
The museums and science centers listed to the right feature a variety of hands-on, interactive activities including: demonstrations of how the sense of smell functions in animals and humans; the link between our senses of taste and smell; how smells can alert us to danger, enhance our alertness, improve our moods and much more. There are also many creative and fragrant craft activities and entertainment in the form of puppet shows, treasure hunts, storytelling, musicians and contests. Click on the museum names to see photos and a brief recap of the activities that took place at each museum.
