Over 1,100 people attended the Lawrence Hall of Science Sense of Smell Day.

Biology Lab
In the biology lab, interns explained to visitors how small animals like rabbits, snakes, turtles and chinchillas, use their sense of smell to survive.  The visitors got to touch and study the noses or lack of nose on each animal.

Match-A-Scent Entertaining hands-on activities included Match-a-Scent, a sense of smell testing game where guests were asked to pair an image with its matching smell.

Detecting Dog One of the highlights of the day was a visit from University of California Police Officer Stu Beatty and explosives detection dog, Bear, who performed a mock search for explosive materials. Officer Beatty explained how important dogs are to police work, and how they use their extra-sensitive noses to save lives. Guests got to meet Bear and give him a hug after the demonstration was over.

Other activities included:

Tiny Smells: Visitors examined the interaction between smell receptors and scent molecules.

Who’s Nose?: Young visitors explored the many shapes and uses of various animal noses.
