Arizona Science Center celebrated Sense of Smell Day for the entire weekend, with approximately 1,000 guests attending activities on Saturday and Sunday. The Center offered a wide range of activities for guests of all ages.

Odor Eaters® Rotten Sneaker Contest™: Visitors between the ages of 5 and 15 registered their smelliest sneakers to see if they were the rottenest sneakers in Phoenix.A panel of three judges rated the condition of the sneakers of local contestants.John Tyler Hinson, age 10 from Glendale, AZ will represent Arizona in the national contest in Vermont in March.
Smelling Clean
Visitors got the opportunity to make their own scented soap to take home as a souvenir of the day. The fragrances used for the soap were smells not normally associated with cleanliness, and included banana, dirt, grass and garlic. Visitors were able to examine the relationship between their sense of smell and their perception of feeling clean.
The Nosy Gourmet
Visitors smelled various unlabelled scents from the kitchen such as cinnamon, vanilla and garlic. They were then instructed to record what they thought the smell was and any memories the smell invoked. Often visitors listed foods that are prepared with the item they smelled, smelling vanilla and recording the scent as baked goods.

Other activities included:
Who’s Nose is it Anyway?: The younger visitor compared the many fun shapes and sizes of different animal noses to their own while learning how animals use their sense of smell.
• The Fragrance Lab: Visitors created their own fragrances using essential oils, fragrance oils and alcohol.
• Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit: The officers demonstrated their dog’s human and narcotic tracking skills.
• Search, Track and Rescue Dogs: Inter-active demonstrations by dog handlers and theircharges mimicked real search and rescue missions, showing guests how dogs use their excellent sense of smell to track criminals and find missing people.
