This was Fernbank’s first time participating in Sense of Smell Day and they had an amazing premiere event.
Smells in the Forest: Guests enjoyed a tour of a section of the science center’s 65-acre forest. They listened to volunteers discuss eight different odorous plants while they smelled samples of the plant’s leaves.
The Ol-Factory: Guests of all ages used puzzles to learn how smell receptors work. Younger visitors used three or four piece puzzles while the older ones used the multi-piece game Perfection to demonstrate the complex smell/receptor relationship.

I Can’t Study Without My Perfume: Visitors studied a list of age-appropriate words in the presence of, and in the absence of a scent. They were then asked to recall the words by picking them from a prepared list containing the words they had studied along with additional words. Many visitors showed enhanced recall when they learned the lists with scent enhancement.
Other activities included:
Smells in the Garden: Visitors learned about a variety of fragrance plants.
Smells Like a Memory to Me: Guests were given the opportunity to write their most important and vivid, scent memories on cards that were then posted on the wall.
I Use My Nose To…: Visitors learned how different animals use their sense of smell. |
