Liberty Science Center had an great turn out for Sense of Smell Day. With over 3,000 visitors, both children and adults alike enjoyed a wonderful day at the museum.

Smell IQ: Visitors were challenged to identify fragrances, such as cappuccino and orange juice, from small plastic containers. Participants who correctly identified six or more scents received a ““Sniffer Extraordinaire” certificate.

Dream Pillows: Museum guests got to make their very own “dream pillow” to take home as an aromatic souvenir. They attached pre-cut swatches of fabric and ribbons together and filled them with potpourri and tea leaves. Scents like chamomile and lavender were used leading the staff to explain about aroma-chology and how since those scents are relaxing they are perfect for a dream pillow.

Scent Dome™: Visitors learned how different fragrance concentrations affected the sense of smell. They used the Scent-Dome™ to produce unique fragrances and then manipulate the concentration levels. They learned that with some smells a larger concentration is needed before the human nose can smell it.

Other activities included:
Explosion of Flavor: Colored jellybeans were used to teach the guests the relationship between taste and smell.

Tunnel of Smell: Guests were asked to identify scents in a tunnel without visual cues and then list what they had smelled once they emerged from the tunnel.
