A veteran Sense of Smell Day participant, the Maryland Science Center had their largest number of visitors for this year. Over 2,600 people celebrated Sense of Smell Day in Baltimore this past April.
The Jellybean Taste Test: Using ten pounds of donated JellyBelly jelly beans the visitors simulated the effects of cold symptoms or nasal congestion. Guests tasted one of the three similarly colored but differently flavored jelly beans, Red Apple, Sizzling Cinnamon or Very Cherry. While chewing the jelly beans, they sniffed a bag of ground coffee to confuse their senses. When asked to describe the taste of the jelly beans, most all were stumped.
Odor Eaters® Rotten Sneaker Contest™: With an entertaining MC, five brave official odorologists, one of them being Scout the dog from Chesapeake Search Dogs, and a odoriferous selection of stinky sneakers, the 3rd Maryland Science Center Odor Eaters® Rotten Sneaker Contest™ was a huge success. The winner, Todd Lohr, age 9 from Waldorf, MD, in fact had brought his sneakers to the museum in a sealed bag. He accredited his win to farm chores.

Yankee Candle Scent Test: Visitors sniffed eight different unlabeled and uniformly colored candles. Without the labels guests had to match the candle with the appropriate scent. Though Sweet Strawberry, Pumpkin Pie, Pineapple Paradise, French Vanilla, Cinnamon, Black Licorice, Lemon Zest and Chocolate Chip Cookie seem obvious, the uniform candle coloring made the game a challenge.
Other activities included:
Smelly Painting, Fun With Scented Play Dough: The Kid’s Room Learning Lab was turned into a non-stop scent activity zone for the younger museum visitors. The biggest hit with the kids was the rubber animal nose each one got to take home with them as a souvenir.
Smelling Bee: Guests were asked to identify 11 different scents correctly for a chance to win a pack of all-inclusive Maryland Science Center tickets. The test was harder this year due to its location next to a very aromatic popcorn vendor.
Canine Guests: Baltimore City Police, Jake a six year old black lab as well as Chesapeake Search Dogs Staff and Scout a Golden Retriever, showed visitors how special a dog’s sense of smell is and all the interesting ways it is used in law enforcement.
