Sense of Smell Institute/
Fragrance Foundation Science of Fragrance Award
The Sense of Smell Institute, which is the research and education division of The Fragrance Foundation, and AChemS have formed an alliance in an effort to strengthen the relationship between AChemS and the Fragrance Industry. The Science of Fragrance Award is designed to encourage research among AChemS members, and others in the chemosensory community that has direct relevance to the fragrance industry. It also serves as a means for disseminating information about this research to Fragrance Foundation members via a white paper that will be linked to the award.
What: Cash award for an oral or poster presentation, made at the annual AChemS meeting, on research that has clear relevancy and potential for application to the creation and/or marketing of fragrance products.
Cash
Award: Award recipient will receive $1000 cash award, followed by a payment of $1,000 upon completion of a white paper based on the research discussed in the presentation.
How: The AChemS Awards Committee sends out a call for nominations to AChemS members, to industry scientists, and others interested in fragrance research, and a similar notice is posted on the AChemS website. Submissions should include an abstract, in AChemS format, of the work to be presented at the AChemS meeting, plus an additional 200 word description of the relevance of the work to fragrance industry interests. Submitting authors must be the first author for the presentation and agree, if the winner of the award, to write a white paper describing the work and its background within 3 months of the award.

Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2007.
When: Oral or Poster presentations will be made at the annual AChemS meeting, April 25-29, 2007, in Sarasota, FL and evaluated according to the criteria below, during the meeting. The winner will be selected and announced after the meeting.
Criteria: First & foremost the presentation will be evaluated for its
scientific merit.
- The research must focus on sense of smell.
- The research should be applicable to human subjects; no animal
studies will be considered.
- Research must have relevance to a company that
creates & markets fragrance or fragranced products

NOTE: The following are just examples of topics that would be considered eligible. Other topics will be considered as long as they meet the criteria stated above and have a clear relevancy to the fragrance industry.
- Effect of fragrance or fragrance ingredients on quality of life.
- Effect of fragrance on performance
- New methods to measure odor preference, effect of odor on quality of life, or effect of odor on emotion.
- Effect of aging on the sense of smell.
- Human Pheromones
- Effect of fragrance on stress/anxiety
Judging
Panel: The AChemS Awards Committee will select the winner. The committee includes an industry member (currently Dr. Rahmin Ansari, Quest International) and, for the selection of this award, two ad-hoc members familiar with fragrance industry concerns will be added (currently Drs. Carol Christensen and Rachel Herz). The winner will be announced in the AChemS newsletter, on the AChemS and SOSI websites, and at the next AChemS meeting.
White
Paper: Final acceptance of the white paper and payment of the additional $1000 is subject to review by The Fragrance Foundation / Sense of Smell Institute management. The white paper may be co-written by the winner’s co-authors on the winning presentation. The paper should be written in a style accessible to knowledgeable but non-expert Fragrance Foundation members who may not have a science background.
Confidentiality: The judging panel will hold all abstracts submitted and reviewed in strictest confidence until publication.
