SenseLab
The SenseLab web site is a collaboration among many research groups at Yale University. It includes a searchable database of the gene sequences for olfactory receptor proteins in humans and other animals.

Yale University School of Medicine
This site at the Yale University School of Medicine describes the anatomy of the cranial nerves, including the olfactory nerve which is responsible for odor perception. Excellent graphics let you follows projections of the olfactory nerve into the brain.

Dr. Eric H. Chudler’s home page
Dr. Eric H. Chudler’s home page at the University of Washington also provides an overview of the cranial nerves and an informative section on  the olfactory system.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute site has a superb report called Seeing, hearing and smelling the world. It includes sections on odorant receptors, pheromones and much more.

Society for Neuroscience
The Society for Neuroscience devotes one of its Brain Briefings to the sense of smell. The article includes information about olfactory anatomy and genetics with graphics.

Dr. Linda Buck
In an article on the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Web site, Dr. Linda Buck and her colleagues describe their discovery of a precise sensory map in the olfactory cortex.

Excellent article on the Discovery Health website that explains in clear, easy to understand language, how the sense of smell works.  A good starting point for those curious about this elusive sense.  Article includes additional links and reference list.


Oxford Journals
Chemical Senses publishes original research and review papers on all aspects of chemoreception in both humans and animals. An important part of the journal's coverage is devoted to techniques and the development and application of new methods for investigating chemoreception and chemosensory structures. This website offers a browsable archive of research articles with links to free abstracts. Full text of articles can be purchased individually or by subscription.

Olfaction: A Review

Leffingwell & Associates provides this comprehensive review paper on all aspects of olfaction. It contains detailed diagrams and illustrations of the olfactory system and odor receptors. The paper can be downloaded as a PDF file. The same site also offers many interesting articles about perfumery, chemoreception and the sense of smell.
